Symptoms & Preventative Measures

When a Apple Computer Company iPhone 4 needs a Complete Dock Replacement

Symptoms associated with problems in the Bottom Dock

The Complete Bottom Dock can significantly effect how the iPhone operates, not just with teh components that are on the bottom dock, but other attributes as well. Here are some of the symptoms of a damaged complete dock:

  • Microphone - Sound is muffled, garbled, quiet or mute during phone calls and voice recordings.
  • Speaker - Sound is muffled, garbled, quiet or mute during speaker-phone calls and audio playback such as music
  • Sync - iPhone will not connect to computer/ iTunes, or fails to sync once connected
  • Charging - iPhone has issues charging (partially or fully)
  • Home Button - iPhone Home Button limited in response or fails altogether

How Docks (or it's components) Fail.
  • Water & Liquid Damage - Peer into the dock, and underneath the flat line plastic, you will see a hole in the bottom of the metal, towards the back of the iPhone, dead center in the dock. If the iPhone has been subjected to fluid(s) the water marker will be red, otherwise it will be white. While water or other fluids might not immediately damage the dock, corrosion will, especially if it's not cleaned out and stopped from growing in time. Corrosion spreads like mold, or rust, and can significantly effect the usability of whatever it 'grows' on. This can include not just the dock, but the speaker (for speakerphone and music playback), microphone, reception issues, and home button functionality.
  • Impact Damage
  • Physical Damage - Foreign Objects can cause significant damage to the bottom dock and prevent charging and syncing, and can even make an iPhone become disabled if certain PINS are crossed. This damage usually occurs when the iPhone is left in a purse where sharp objects have poked the dock station and bent pins, or when a user cleans the dock area of lint or other foreign matter. To properly clean, use extreme care and NEVER brush the top part of the pins inside the docking area. Use something like a needle with a precise point to pick out the lint or other matter, and go slow.

Preventative measures include a hard case, such as an otter box or other hard plastic case with padding inside. To prevent water damage, using a case like an otter box, you have a rubber flap that helps resist hard object and/or fluid damage through the dock, speaker and microphone ports. Keeping the iPhone in a separate pocket as other objects also helps, whether in a purse or pants pockets.

Are the AT&T/GSM iPhone 4 Docks the same as the Verizon/CDMA iPhone Dock?

While the GSM & CDMA iPhnes look very similar, No, they are not compatible with eachother. Complete Docks are not interchangable, and while some components are the same between GSM iPhone 4 and CDMA iPhone 4, This part is not compatible.

Is this part an Original iPhone part?

Yes. There is a 1 Year Warranty against manufacturing defects or installation errors, including the part and labor to replace it. Please ensure that you pick up a warranty card at the time of repair. The warranty explicitly does not include any damage to the back case or cover that is cracked or broken in any way, or if there is any water damage to the iPhone, or if the iPhone was repaired by any other company. Warranty validation may require further inquiry than initial inspection.
